Waterloo is the root node. Everything else hangs off it: the clients, the engineers, the deployments. When trust is the scarcest thing going, being the same studio in every timezone is most of the job.

04The studio
It started in a village in India.
There was no software industry nearby. There was a laptop, an internet connection that mostly worked, and a stubborn conviction that distance from the centre of things is a logistics problem rather than a verdict.
Six years later the same person files taxes in Ontario, holds a business number issued by the Government of Canada, and ships software for clients in Texas, New York, Villigen, Tübingen and Lviv from a building in Waterloo.
That journey is why the logo looks the way it does. A root node isn’t the most important node in a network. It is simply the one everything else can be traced back to. In a world busy rewriting who it can count on, the useful thing to be is the node that holds: the one that answers, ships, and is still there in the morning.
Canada gave it somewhere to be registered. The work is what made it real.
